gothHoblin's Grimoire is an online tabletop roleplaying game zine with a focus on system-neutral tools, supplements and creative works intended either for direct use at the table, or to inspire game masters and players alike who may be diving into stories that match our theme. Each issue publishes yearly in October and is 100% free to read. 2025 is our first year where we will be publishing on our website rather than producing PDFs (Click here to read previous issues).
Theme
Our chosen theme for Issue 4 is Supernatural. This includes both the modern & urban fantasy genres; think creatures like vampires, werewolves, witches, divine beings, ghosts, demons and the like in a modern, real world setting, with dark and mysterious themes. To help focus the issue and avoid overlap with past and future themes, we will be looking for contributions that utilise a contemporary setting (post-1950 or so).If you're looking for inspiration, here's some touchstones for this theme:TTRPGs: Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf, other World of Darkness games, Monster of the Week, WitchCraft, City of Mist, Ten Candles, Paint the Town Red, Blood Borg, Urban Shadows, The Dresden Files.Movies & TV: Underworld, Constantine, True Blood, American Horror Story, Good Omens, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Shadowhunters, The Craft, The Crow, Fright Night, From Dusk Till Dawn, Lisa Frakenstein, The Magicians, Stranger Things.Books: A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, King Rat by China Mieville, The Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries by Charmaine Harris, The Starless Sea by Erin Mogenstern, Salem's Lot by Stephen King, The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, The Modern Faerie Tales by Holly Black, Signal to Noise by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
Submissions information
The types of submissions we accept include articles, how to's, listicles, reviews, rolling tables, encounters, one page adventures, poetry, artwork, creative writing, homebrew magic items, homebrew spells, recipes, maps, npcs, biomes… almost anything you can think of that relates to TTRPGs and fits within our current theme is eligible. We prefer submissions created specifically for the Grimoire, but we will also accept simultaneous submissions and previously published work.Once you have submitted work, please allow up to four months for a response. We will not be able to respond individually to questions regarding a submission's status - please do not message any of our mod team about your submission on any platform. If your work is accepted, you will hear from us via email. Please note that we publish once per year in October, so even if we accept your submission in July, it will be published alongside the rest of the issue on the specified date and not before.gothHoblin's Grimoire editors make all final judgements regarding categories and tags, SEO titles, page descriptions and keywords, as well as art direction for articles and other text-based submissions. Once a submission has been published, it will not be removed from the website except in cases of plagiarism, use of generative AI, abusive behaviour or other situations that may pose a threat to our readers and contributors. Please note that your work will only appear online. After Issue 3, we are no longer producing PDF zines and our focus is solely on the website. If we do decide to run an anthology project in a different medium, we will communicate this separately and contact contributors directly if we are interested in including any of their work. This project is for fun and for love, and as a way to collaborate and showcase one another as a part of the TTRPG community. gothHoblin's Grimoire does not seek to make money, all of our staff are volunteers and therefore contributing is also on a voluntary basis. The content is made available to readers for no cost, therefore we offer no monetary compensation for contributors, but encourage the inclusion of a ko-fi link so that readers can tip directly if they choose. You retain all the rights to your work and may republish it elsewhere, however for new submissions created specifically for the Grimoire we do request a short, 3-month exclusivity period as a courtesy. As we publish in October, this generally means that contributions may be republished elsewhere from January of the following year. If you do republish your piece, we'd love it if you would include a small credit, such as "This piece first appeared in gothHoblin's Grimoire.", and link back to the page.
